A brief overview of emulators, which make it possible to play the old games downloaded from the site OldGames.sk. In the table you can click on the column name and sort the items. Link "download" offer to download an application directly from this site, but it's only for archiving, it does not update, so it is always better to look directly at the "Official Website" of project, where you can find actual version (of course if the project did not end).
DOSBox is the best emulator of old PC running MS DOS. It evolves as OpenSource for multiple platforms and offers a wide range of configurations. Includes emulation of several types of graphics cards, sound cards, network or joystick.
ScummVM is an interpreter of SCUMM engine (developed by Lucas Arts for adventures). It is an Open Source, by which time there is support for other adventure engines like Virtual Theatre (Revolution). Develpers Ports ScummVM to all systems, including mobile devices. To play the old point-and-click adventure games, this is the best option.
At the moment, probably the best Amiga emulator for all Windows computers, able to build a full Amiga on your PC. WinUAE emulates all functions as a processor (Motorola 68000), chips OCS, ECS, AGA, floppy drives, joystick, mouse or serial ports.
VICE is a complex emulator of 8-bit computers Commodore 64/128, C64 DTV, VIC 20, PET, CBM PLUS 4 and 2, for many operating systems like Windows, DOS, Unix, Amiga, Mac OS X etc. Emulation contains a number of settings, including speed changes.
Stella is the most comfortable open source emulator of the popular console Atari 2600 VCS (Video Computer System). It is constantly in development and now is available for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X, Linux - Ubuntu.
Steem, I think, is the most ideal emulator of 16-bit Atari ST for Windows (XSteem for Linux), very comfortable with set of options and excellent sound emulation, where the program uses the General MIDI device of host computer. Its development was not completed and the latest version is 3.2 from 2004.
Project Tempest is one of the first functional emulators of Atari Jaguar console, and I think the most reliable even though its development was ended. The latest version is 0.95 for Windows.
Kega Fusion is and emulator of consoles Sega SG1000, SC3000, SF7000, Master System, Game Gear, Genesis / Megadrive, SVP, Pico, SegaCD / MegaCD, 32X for OS Windows95/ME/2000/XP/Vista/Win7, Mac OSX (Intel ), and Linux.
AppleWin (Apple //e Emulator for Windows) is Open Source emulator Apple ][, Apple ][+ and Apple //e computers for OS Windows. Reliably emulates the CPU 65C02, 128k RAM, 5.25 "floppy drives, joystick and color or monochrome monitor / TV screen.
Nestopia is Open Source emulator of NES/Famicom console, developed in C++ language, aimed for closely as possible and most accurate NES emulation. It is for OS Windows, Linux and Mac OS.
Zsnes is a quality Open Source emulator of SNES console (Super Nintendo Entartainment System), with a very nice user interface (GUI), created for DOS, Windows and Linux.
MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is emulator of large coin-up arcade machines. Is runable from the command line and can emulate almost any machine that has been made. If you wants Arcade machine at home, just you need a PC with this emulator, X-Arcade joystick and a big wooden cabinet...
BlueMSX is an excellent advanced emulator of SG-1000,SC-3000,SF-7000,ColecoVision,SVI318/328, MSX, MSX2, MSX2+ and turboR devices, with a lot of features and settings.
CPCE was developed by César Nicolás González in 2002 and he still keeps it live. Emulates the 8-bit Amstrad CPC computer, models CPC464, CPC664 and CPC6128.
EmuZWin is an excellent emulator of Spectrum by russian programmer Vladimir Kladov. Its latest version is 2.7, it can work with many disc formats supported RZX videos, 256 color games, Kempston mouse, etc.
Utils
Useful programs to help run the old games on modern operating systems.
Wing32.dll is a graphics library used by most of the old games on OS Windows 95/98 (before Direct X interface). If any game requires a file, appropriate error message appears. It must be copied into system directory: C: \ WINDOWS \ System32 \ on newer OS like Windows XP/2000/Vista.
Xteq Ram Alloc is an small freeware program, able to allocate (or take) the block of memory. We use it for running Old Games for Windows 95/98, which we want to run on Windows XP (in compatibility mode) and have a problem with too much free memory.
