Sears, Roebuck and Co. was the largest retailer in the U.S.A. in the 1970s, with about 900 stores. The company became involved with videogames when Atari pitched its first home console to the retailer, based around the game Pong. No toy or hi-fi stores were interested in the concept, and Sears was a last resort.
